Nice Scam, Buddy...
I’ve spoken to many folks about solar for their homes and it feels like there are several categories they might fit in regarding their opinion about the industry.
The two broad categories are the ‘interested’ and the ‘not interested’ people.
Not interested people have many thoughts but the dominant opinion is something along the lines of:
“Solar is a scam”
And after seeing how so many of them had horrible experiences with the bait-n-switch lead gen websites combined with possibly overly pushy sales presentations, I can’t blame them.
In Tucson specifically, one major basis for the ‘its a scam’ team is the solar leases and power purchase agreements (PPAs) that have ‘escalation clauses’ in them that absolutely guarantee the homeowner will pay higher prices- locked in for the duration of the lease/PPA.
Another sentiment is that ‘it’s not worth it’ because you ‘can’t sell power back to TEP’ which therefore makes it at minimum not financially viable and at worst- a scam if the Sales Bro is making promises.
And, let’s not forget the power of the experiences folks are having at their doors. I wonder how many of you are like me on this one…
I don’t answer most calls any more as well. A phone call is an Unwanted Intrusion into my day, and it kind of makes me a little grumpy. I pretty much let all calls go to voicemail- if it wasn’t important enough to leave a message, it wasn’t important enough for me to answer.
A knock at the door?
An entirely next-level of obnoxious intrusion into my privacy, if you ask me. Seriously, an unexpected knock at the door genuinely gets my caustic Sailor mode going in an instant…
My feeling is this- My home is the last bastion of serenity I have. My phone, mailbox, email, television, radio, everywhere else is hammered with sales advertising. When I get home, I am in a sanctuary where I can do things on my schedule according to my whims and desires.
A knock at the door then represents an obnoxious intrusion where now I am forced to do the bidding of the door knocker. I have to stop what I was doing to answer the door and then have to endure the expectation of some stranger that I interact with them.
I consider it very rude for them to try to impose their will on me at my doorstep. And the thing that gets my vinegar really going is when they ask…
“Why Not”
When I say ‘not interested’ at my doorstep and the Sales Bro pumps me with a ‘why not’ I take it as a direct challenge by them to ‘justify’ myself to them… and quite honestly, the rage boils over when that happens.
The next thing is I don’t want to spray rage on the person, so now I have to retreat into the home and shut the door- but to do so forces me to be ‘rude’. The door knocker put me in a no-win solution and I HATE it.
Does that describe your feelings too?
Well, with the lead gen shenanigans, questionable lease and PPA financing, and door knockers- there is no wonder as to why average folks might think ‘solar is a scam’.
The reality is however the exact opposite…
Solar is very viable for Tucson homeowners.
Just have to get hooked up with the right folks to get the real answers- and that’s why I am going to release my new book Tucson Solar Insider Desk Guide for Buying Solar soon.
If you are interested in solar but are tired of the lead gen and door knockers, I suggest you might consider getting on the notification list for when I release the book. Click here to check it out.
