“worst energy infrastructure failure in Texas state history”
In February 2021 (about two years ago) Texas suffered three severe winter storms that triggered what has been called “the worst energy infrastructure failure in Texas state history.”
It can be hard to see through the various narratives being told when reporting on the storm and the consequences, but at least one source suggests that more than 240 people died as a direct or indirect result of the crisis.
Also hard to discern though all of the media bias was the real root causes. Some suggest that the Texas approach to electrical power distribution (the free market thing) caused much of it because of less federal oversight.
Others blame the limited number of ties to the rest of the country’s electrical grid, cost cutting for contingencies, and even global warming.
No matter though. If a home that relies on electrical power from that grid exclusively, it wasn’t getting power for an extended period of time. I don’t know about you, but I never expected to hear snow storms in Texas to do such damage.
About a week or two ago Tucson had a huge snowfall all the way into town, not just up on the mountains. I’m not saying Tucson is susceptible to an outage the way that Texas system was, but I can’t say it is the best approach to dismiss the idea either…
What preparations do you think you need to make for an extended power outage if one were to occur? Some have gone all in on this and have installed emergency generators with automatic disconnect switches. Some with solar power systems and batteries along with a similar disconnect switch.
If you are exploring (or want to explore) solar power for your Tucson home, I am writing a guide to help you get smart before you reach out to those solar companies and their sales teams…
